Aontú has selected its candidate for the Foyleside DEA in the forthcoming local government elections.

With polling day scheduled for May 18, 2023, the Aontú Foyleside candidate will be Seán Mac Cearáin, a retired further education lecturer.

Mr Mac Cearáin worked for 35 years in the North West Regional College.

Speaking after his selection, Mr Mac Cearáin said: "I'm humbled to have been selected as a candidate for Aontú in the upcoming local elections.

“Having spent many years teaching on schemes aimed at the personal development of the unemployed youth in the city, I have an intimate knowledge of the problems that face our youth.

“I am passionate about developing the services available to the youth in our community. Our community has borne the brunt of the failure of the Stormont parties' failed policies".

"We have high unemployment coupled with a spiralling crisis of antisocial behaviour. It is important that these issues aren’t just neglected but are tackled properly. Aontú is the fastest growing political movement, north and south. It is an opportunity to finally tackle the issues that the Stormont parties have neglected for so long.”

Mr Mac Cearáin added that by putting Aontú’s values at the forefront of his campaign, he hoped to fight unemployment, welfare dependency and emigration in the community.

He said: “For years I have been very involved in our community, Foyleside, from teaching Irish language, as the language and cultural officer for Na Magha Hurling club and as a traditional fiddle player.

“I love our community and am dedicated to working hard to improve it.”
