A well-known Derry man has raised almost €4,000 for charity.

Muff-based councillor Terry Crossan used his 70th birthday to raise much-needed funds for Pieta House.

The Sinn Féin councillor held a birthday party in the Point Lodge in Quigley's Point on Saturday night with a host of prizes to be won.

Cllr Crossan said he previously held a fundraiser on his 30th wedding anniversary.

“Myself and wife held a fundraiser on our 30th wedding anniversary and that was very successful,” he explained. “I wanted to do something similar for my 70th birthday, which was actually on Boxing Day, but we didn't know who to raise funds for.

“I was in the Point Lodge one day and then a local couple walked in, Claire and Conal McGonagle and it instantly came to me to hold it for Pieta House. Pieta House was fully behind us and were consulted in every decision made with regards to the fundraiser.”

Cllr Crossan said he was blown away by the generosity of the local community.

“I would like to personally thank everyone who donated or helped in any way. It has been a real community effort and the generosity of the public had no bounds.

“Danny Moore in the Point Lodge was brilliant, he provided the venue and food at no charge and entertainer Michael Doherty played with no charge.

“I'm grateful to everyone for making it such a great occasion.”
