Politicians must get back to work in an Assembly and Executive - Foyle MLA

Stormont

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has said that the first order of business in 2023 for politicians in the North should be to get back to work in an Assembly and Executive.

Ms. McLaughlin said: “As 2023 starts in very difficult circumstances, the clear message from the public to the politicians is that they want us to get back to work.

"While we appreciate there are issues with the implementation of the Protocol, the problems facing people are far more pressing and urgent and the truth is that there is only so much that can be done without a devolved administration here working for people.

“People across Derry are anxiously waiting for the rollout of the £600 Energy support scheme, but many have questions about exactly how this is working.

"Many more are sick this winter and the pressure being felt in our hospitals, particularly our emergency departments, is immense. We need Ministers in post to answer questions, make representations to the British Government and deliver solutions.

“It’s just unforgivable that in the crucible of the cost-of-living crisis, people here are being abandoned to fortune. The people I represent should not be made to wait one more day for a government.

"While we might not be able to solve all the issues facing people, the very least they deserve is that we roll up our sleeves and do all we can to help.”
