A new café in Derry is aiming to tackle loneliness and isolation among the migrant community.

The Social Connection Café, run through the North West Migrants Forum, is a space for people to connect and meet new people in a friendly and safe atmosphere.

People who attend the café are able to get food and hot drinks, play a variety of games as well as have the chance to speak to people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Director of Programmes at the forum, Lilian Seenoi-Barr, said the café gave people from all backgrounds an opportunity to connect with others.

Speaking to BBC Radio Foyle, Ms Seenoi-Barr said: "We wanted to tackle loneliness and isolation by providing a space where people feel welcome and at home.
"We wanted to create a connected Derry, where people can feel like they are home, even if they are originally from far away."

Ms Seenoi-Barr said the café was mainly for people who may "feel socially isolated within the community" but is open to everyone.

"There are a lot of people who may feel alienated from society, they are newcomers within the city and may have no family or friends here," Ms Seenoi-Barr added.
The North West Migrant Forum said: "Derry people are known for their kindness, welcoming and supportive nature.

"You may have seen or heard about our Befriending Social Connection Cafe.

"Everyone - no matter your age, ethnicity or background - is welcome to come down, have a meal, play some games, chat and meet some new people.

"You from Derry? Want to meet our new residents? Or are you feeling isolated and want a warm and welcoming community around you? Come and join us."
