Join the day trip from Derry to the seaside to build friendships and reminisce.

The Western Health & Social Care Trust is inviting local residents aged 60 and over to step on board the ‘Chat-Tea Train’ for a nostalgic day trip to Portrush on Tuesday, June 16 2026.

Organised in partnership with GP Practice Social Work teams, the initiative coincides with national Loneliness Awareness Week which runs from June 15 to June 21. The project aims to tackle social isolation, combat loneliness, and encourage older people to build meaningful new friendships within their community by recreating the classic tradition of a summer train trip to the seaside.

A spokesperson for the Western Trust GP Social Work Team said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people on board our Chat Tea Train later this month. This event is open to people aged 60+ who have their travel pass card. Please ensure to bring your travel ticket on the day and maybe even a beach towel!!

“We are asking people to arrive at the North West Transport Hub for 9.30am to give them time for parking as it is limited, to get their ticket, enjoy the entertainment and have a chat with other passengers before we board our train to Portrush at 10.38am.

“Please be advised there is a short walk to cross over at Coleraine station for the connecting train to Portrush. Please remind patients this may not be suitable for anyone who has difficulty with mobility, however a carer can attend if requires support as staff are unable to provided one-to-one support on the day due to the number of people attending this event.

“Passengers will have the option of free time to grab a cup of tea/coffee, bite to eat or shop at their leisure in Portrush.

“Passengers are asked to be back in the Train Station for 2.00pm to give plenty of time before we hop on board to make the return journey to arrive back in Derry for 3.22pm.
