Elisha McCallion has been confirmed as MP for Foyle this evening after beating the SDLP's Mark Durkan by just 169 votes.

Sinn Fein's McCallion topped the poll with 18,256 votes.

Incumbent Mark Durkan of the SDLP received 18,087 votes.

They were followed by the DUP's Gary Middleton on 7398 votes.

Next was People Before Profit's Shaun Harkin on 1377 followed by the Alliance's John Doherty on 847.

In her victory speech Mrs McCallion dedicated the win to the late deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness who she said guided her and the Sinn Fein team throughout the campaign.

In his concession speech outgoing MP Mark Durkan took full blame for the defeat and thanked the people of Derry for giving him the chance to serve.

Mr Durkan mentioned that irregularities surrounding the voting practices during the election may be raised by the SDLP and other parties at a later stage.
