A Derry man has been chosen to represent Ireland at a prestigious international clay pigeon shooting competition taking place this weekend.

Creggan man, Gareth Warren, travelled to Dundee yesterday to take part in the Home International clay pigeon shoot, which is a major competition with teams for England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland competing against one another.

Depending on his performance Gareth could potentially be selected to represent his country at European Championships or the Olympics in future.

The 35-year-old (pictured) first learned how to shoot after becoming friends with the Brown family at St. Peter’s High School.

Speaking ahead of the event, he said: “I’m buzzing thinking about it.

“It was my goal at the start of the year to shoot for the Irish team and I’ve made it.

“We are hoping to be crowned Home Nations champions.

“If I shoot well, hopefully I’ll get a sponsorship deal that could lead on to the Olympics or the Europeans.

“At the moment I have just asked for some support from the crowd I work with to help paying for travel, accommodation, cartridges and the national uniform.”

Gareth described himself as a “proud man from Creggan” to have the opportunity to pull on the green of Ireland and represent his country.

He expressed his thanks to Springtown Kitchens has been a great support to him over the years and his team mates for making him feel welcome since he has joined the team.
