The men of Derry are being encouraged to show that anything the women can do, the men can do better.

The 13th annual Foyle Hospice male walk/run will take place on Sunday, September 25.

However, the men have never been able to match the turnout for the annual ladies walk/run in aid of the hospice.

So organisers of the upcoming event are hoping for a record turnout from local men and boys.

The run starts at Sainsbury’s cafe at 1.30pm and hugs the banks of the river Foyle crossing the Peace Bridge running/walking the greenway to Foyle Bridge then onto Bay Road park to finish at Sainsbury’s.

The boys mini marathon will start at Sainsbury’s and run up to the Peace Bridge and back to Sainsbury’s.

All participants for both events will receive a sports tech tee shirt goodie bag and Foyle Hospice medal.

A spokesperson for the Foyle Hospice said they would love to see as many men and boys take part in the event.

“This event is very important to Foyle Hospice as not only raises funds for the services provided by Foyle Hospice but it raises awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyle by doing a bit of exercise.

“The running cost for Foyle Hospice is approximately £3 million a year,.

“This money is made up from a block grant of around 24% from government and the remaining 76% are generous donated by the northwest community.

“It’s only with this help from our community that we can provide the specialist palliative care for people living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses here in Foyle Hospice in-patient unit our Day-care unit and Hospice at home services.”

The spokesperson urged anyone taking part in the men’s event to use a sponsor card to raise extra funds.

“These extra funds raised by getting family, friends and work colleagues to sponsor you will help fund our homecare team who in the past year made 3,826 home visits to patients in their own home.

“Our day-care hospice brings patients in from home which in turn lets the carers get a break allowing time to get other business matters carried out or appointments. Day-care had 1,087 patient visits during the year.”

The men’s walk/run event is being sponsored by Seagate.
