A 69 year-old former Derry City Council employee was today jailed for 18 months for sexually abusing a boy.

Brendan McGowan, from Brewster’s Close in the William Street area, pleaded guilty last month to six counts of indecently assaulting the child, two counts of committing an act of gross indecency towards the boy and one charge of inciting the child to commit an act of gross indecency.

The abuse started in September 1989 when the boy was 12 years-old.

Derry Crown Court was today told that McGowan first met his young victim when he was working as a swimming instructor at William Street Swimming Pool in Derry.

The abuse took place for four years until the boy was aged 16.

A judge said McGowan had used the boy to satisfy his sexual desires.

McGowan was today also banned from working with children and young adults ever again.
