Final call to help build unique Derry cardboard creation

A final call has gone out for local people to help build a new state set to be established in Derry next week – made entirely from cardboard!

The Verbal Arts Centre and surrounding area will be transformed through the construction of The People’s Republic of Creativity.

The project, which is supported through funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 May.

International artists from Made in Cardboardia along with Voluntary Arts Ireland, the Verbal Arts Centre, Urban Vizualz, In Your Space and the North West Carnival Initiative, will lead the event, which even includes the building of an embassy – out of cardboard.

The organisers are looking for people to join the Cardboardia street performance lab for a week full of creativity and collaboration and to help with the construction, preparation and presentation of the event.

Activities programmed during the two-day event include an opening speech by Tyran of Cardboardia, Civic Conversation, Street Art Workshop, Cardboardia Workshop for families making costumes and masks, film screenings, opening of the Cardboardia Embassy, Café on the Walls Bake-Off, In Your Space Youth Circus performance, Second Line NI – the city’s New Orleans style marching band - and Cardboardia diploma awards ceremony for workshop participants and partners.

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to an information meeting will take place tonight at 6.30pm In Your Space building, Waterloo Place.
