A Derry-based charity which supports families bereaved by road traffic collision / fatality is encouraging families to 'Spot the Biker' and help make roads safer.
Life After gives "a voice to those behind the statistics and remembers and celebrated the lives of people who have died on the roads".
The organisation is calling on parents and carers across the community to take part in what it described as "a simple, engaging, and potentially life-saving activity" with their children: playing “Spot the Biker” while travelling in the car.
Inspired by a successful campaign delivered by a charity in Wales, a spokesperson for Life After said it was "proud to share this brilliant idea more widely, encouraging families to turn everyday journeys into opportunities for awareness and learning".
"As brighter evenings arrive and the weather improves, more cyclists and motorcyclists will be out on the roads. While this seasonal shift is welcome, it also brings increased responsibility for all road users to stay alert and aware," they added.
“'Spot the Biker' is a fun and interactive game that encourages children to actively look out for people on bikes during car journeys. Whether it’s a cyclist commuting home or a motorcyclist enjoying the open road, children are encouraged to call out each sighting - turning passive travel into an engaging experience.
"But beyond the fun, the game carries an important message.
"By involving children in this activity, parents can help nurture awareness from a young age -building habits that will stay with them as future drivers, passengers, and responsible road users. It helps children understand that roads are shared spaces and that everyone has a role to play in keeping each other safe.
"Sometimes the simplest ideas can have the biggest impact. ‘Spot the Biker’ is a fantastic way to start conversations with children about road safety while also making journeys more enjoyable. By sharing ideas like this, we can all play our part in creating safer roads for everyone," said the Life After spokesperson.
"Life After encourages all families to give it a try on their next journey. It’s easy to play, costs nothing, and could help shape safer attitudes for years to come.
Together, through small actions and shared ideas, we can make a big difference."
