A local councillor has described an incident in which an eleventh night bonfire was deliberately set alight in Maghera as ‘an attack on Protestant culture’.

It is understood that shortly after 3am on Friday morning, the bonfire at King William III Estate was set alight.

DUP’s Anne Forde has said that the residents living in the estate are ‘devastated’ following the incident.

She said: “It is absolutely disgraceful that the bonfire in the King William III Estate in Maghera was set alight in the middle of the night.

"This is an attack on the Protestant culture.  Shame on those who are responsible for this."
