Derg comprises the district electoral areas of Sion Mills, Finn, Castlederg, Newtownstewart and Glenderg and had five seats up for grabs.
Sinn Féin was the big winner in the constituency in Local Election 2023, with Caroline Devine Ruairí McHugh and Antaine Ó Fearghall all elected for the party.
Controversial UUP candidate, Derek Hussey was also re-elected, as was the DUP’s Keith Kerrigan.
Steven Edwards (SDLP), Leza Marie Houston (Aontú), Adam McGinley (Alliance), Andy Patton (Independent) were eliminated.
The seat breakdown in Derg in 2023 replicated the 2014 results, the ward returned 3 Sinn Féin, 1 DUP and 1 UUP candidate. In 2019, Derg returned 2 Sinn Féin, 1 DUP, 1 UUP and 1 SDLP candidate. The SDLP gained a seat from Sinn Féin.
In 2023, the total number of the Derg electorate was 13,672. There were 8,549 valid votes cast. There were 111 spoilt votes and the quota was set at 1,425 votes.
The first preference tallies were: Caroline Devine (1,246), Steven Edwards (723), Leza Marie Houston (99), Derek Hussey (1,377), Keith Kerrigan (1,669), Adam McGinley (112), Ruairi McHugh (1,442), Anne Murray (177), Antaine Ó Fearghail (1,197), and Andy Patton (507).
In the Derg Ward there were two changes during the previous Council term. Derek Hussey (UUP) was suspended from the council for fifteen months from 16 July 2019. During his suspension he resigned from council and was replaced by Andy McKane who resigned at the end of the fifteen months for Hussey to return. On June 1 2020, Cara Hunter (SDLP) was co-opted to the NI Assembly and Steven Edwards (SDLP) was co-opted on as her replacement.
