The Local Elections on May 18 will see a total of 462 councillors elected to 11 local councils across the North of Ireland.
Forty of those will be elected onto Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Derry City and Strabane District Council comprises seven wards: Ballyarnett, Derg, Faughan, Foyleside, Sperrin, The Moor, and Waterside.
Today we take a closer look at each of the wards.
The overall turnout in Derry City and Strabane District Council electoral area for 2019 Local Government Election was 56.21% with a total of 60,695 valid votes cast. A total of 1,103 ballots were rejected.
Derg
Derg comprises the district electoral areas of Sion Mills, Finn, Castlederg, Newtownstewart and Glenderg. It has 5 seats.
In 2014, Derg returned 3 Sinn Féin, 1 DUP and 1 UUP candidate.
In 2019, it returned 2 Sinn Féin, 1 DUP, 1 UUP and 1 SDLP candidate. The SDLP gained a seat from Sinn Féin.
There are ten candidates standing in Derg. They are: Caroline Devine (Sinn Féin); Steven Edwards (SDLP); Leza Marie Houston (Aontú); Derek Hussey (UUP); Keith Kerrigan (DUP); Adam McGinley (People Before Profit); Ruairí McHugh (Sinn Féin); Anne Murray (Alliance); Antaine Ó Fearghail (Sinn Féin); Andy Patton (Independent).
In 2019, the total number of the Derg electorate was 12,996. There were 8,004 valid votes cast. There were 116 spoilt votes and the quota was set at 1,335 votes.
The first preference tallies were: Keith Kerrigan (DUP) 1,090 votes (elected); Derek Hussey (UUP) 1,267 votes (elected); Ruairí McHugh (Sinn Féin) 1,086 votes (elected); Cara Hunter (SDLP) 1,032 votes (elected); Kieran McGuire (Sinn Féin) 1,075 votes (elected); Andy Patton (Independent) 735 votes; Maolíosa McHugh (Sinn Féin) 798 votes; Thomas Kerrigan (DUP) 771 votes; Anne Murray (Alliance) 150 votes.
In the Derg Ward there were two changes during the Council term. Derek Hussey (UUP) was suspended from the council for fifteen months from 16 July 2019. During his suspension he resigned from council and was replaced by Andy McKane who resigned at the end of the fifteen months for Hussey to return. On June 1 2020, Cara Hunter (SDLP) was co-opted to the NI Assembly and Steven Edwards (SDLP) was co-opted on as her replacement.
