A battle is looming for the final seat in the Faughan ward of the new Derry & Strabane council.

The DUP's Gary Middleton topped the poll this afternoon with 1,077 first preference votes.

As a result, he was elected on the first count.

He is expected to be joined shortly by his party colleague Maurice Devenney (pictured above with Gary Middleton) and Sinn Fein Paul Fleming.

However, there looks set to be a tight contest to fill the final two seats in the ward.

The SDLP's three candidates, Gus Hastings, Brenda Stevenson and Jim McKeever, all polled a similar number of first preference votes.

Ronnie McKeegan of the UUP and independent candidate Paul Hughes are also in the running for the seat.
