A young Derry treasure-hunter found something very precious indeed during a weekend trip to the beach and reunited one happy lady from Dundalk with very prized possessions.

Last Sunday, eight-year-old Oliver O’Neill was playing on Culdaff beach with his family and cousins, who are visiting from London, when something caught the intrepid explorer’s eye.

“I was playing in the rocks with my cousin Sean when I saw something shining in the sand,” said Oliver.

“I went over to see what it was and seen it was a ring. Then I saw another ring lying beside it.

“I shouted that I had found some treasure but when my Mammy saw the rings she said they were a wedding ring and an engagement ring.”

Oliver’s Daddy, Ciaran, shared a picture of the rings online, which bore an inscription inside, and the status was shared over 13,000 times.

“When we got home my daddy put a picture of the rings on Facebook and loads of people shared the picture,” he said.

“The next day a lady rang my daddy and said the rings belonged to her.

“She came up to our house and said she was really happy to get the rings back as she thought she had lost them forever.”

Aileen Fitzgerald from Dundalk had been holidaying in Donegal with her family when she lost the rings on the beach.

Oliver was delighted when he was handsomely rewarded for his good deed.

“She was very kind and gave me a reward for finding the rings,” he added.

We’re sure Oliver will be keeping an eye out in future for any other ‘treasure’ that will bring good fortune his way!
