Councillor Sean McPeake has welcomed the progress on the scheme.
Mid-Ulster district Councillor Sean McPeake has spoken of the continued progress being made towards the construction of approximately 1km of a new Cycle/Footway between Maghera and the village of Gulladuff.
Speaking to the County Derry Post, the Carntogher councillor said: “As a long time advocate for the extension of the existing footway on the A42 Road from Maghera towards Gulladuff I am delighted to learn from DFI Active Travel Team that the design stage of the 6.5m wide footway has been completed and discussions with affected landowners progressed to an advanced stage. The footway is being designed to incorporate the highest safety standards with grass strip roadside buffering the footway.
“There is no doubt that the footway when complete will be of huge benefit to the locals using this route, both in road safety terms for pedestrians, cyclists and commuters alike but also the huge health and well-being benefit’s the project will bring to the various user and community groups who have all pledged support for the project.”
He continued: “When complete this project will provide an additional 1km footway link between Gulladuff and Maghera. This ‘missing link’ will link into existing footway in Gulladuff village and provide a continuous footway between Gulladuff, Maghera and indeed a further 20 miles towards the North Coast. This in itself would be a tremendous achievement to have such an extent of continuous footway locally, which would facilitate more outside participation in walking and cycling in a safer environment.
“Given the complexities of a scheme of this significance and a considerable number of impacted landowners I wish to commend DFI Active Travel Senior Engineer Donna Mc Garvey and her team for their continued endeavours in having this scheme included in their programme of works for delivery during 2023/2024 financial year and construction to commence.”
