Mike Phelan will visit the city tomorrow to take part in two events in association with the Ryan McBride Foundation.
The man who was long time assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson is set to visit Derry and will deliver a coach education session at Leafair 3G pitch before attending a fans’ forum at the Cosh Bar where attendees will have the opportunity to ask him questions about his career.
Phelan won the first ever Premier League as a player with Manchester United in 1993 as well as the FA Cup in 1990, the league cup in 1992 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991. He returned to United as a coach in 2000, becoming first-team coach in 2001 and then became Sir Alex Ferguson’s Assistant Manager in 2008, a role he held up until Ferguson retired in 2013.
During his 12 years in Ferguson’s coaching team, the club achieved great success, winning 6 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 4 league cups, a Champions League and a Club World Cup.
Following a spell as manager of Hull City and as sporting director for Central Coast Mariners in Australia, Phelan returned to Manchester United in 2019 as Assistant Manager to Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. Despite the Norwegian leaving the club in 2022, Phelan has remained with the club in ambassador role.
Phelan will be in the city in his capacity as director of Sensible Soccer, a company that works with grass roots football which is partnering locally with the Ryan McBride Foundation which was set up in memory of Derry City captain Ryan McBride.
