Derry City will host 2024 champions Shelbourne at the Ryan McBride Brandywell on Friday evening in round six of the SSE Airtricity League, with fixtures already beginning to come thick and fast for Tiernan Lynch’s side after a stop-start opening to the new campaign.

The Candystripes currently sit fourth in the table after five games, having picked up seven points from a mixed run of results. Late victories against Sligo Rovers and Waterford, along with a last-minute penalty against Dundalk, have kept them within touching distance of the early leaders. However, they already trail Bohemians by six points at the summit, with Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic sitting ahead of Derry.

Shelbourne, managed by Joey O’Brien, have also endured a difficult start to the season and currently sit two places behind the Candystripes. The former champions have taken six points from their opening five games, claiming their first win in round three away to Drogheda after beginning the campaign with back-to-back 1–1 draws against Waterford and Galway United.

The Drumcondra side entertained Shamrock Rovers on Monday evening and played out a thrilling 2–2 draw, surrendering an early two-goal advantage to share the spoils. Last weekend Shelbourne were involved in another dramatic Dublin derby at Tolka Park, where St Patrick’s Athletic snatched a late 3–2 victory thanks to a decisive stoppage-time strike from Max Mata.

Shels are currently dealing with a number of injuries. Tenacious full-back Milan Mbeng missed both Dublin derbies through injury and joins Sean Moore on the sidelines with a groin problem. Paddy Barrett, Ellis Chapman and Odhrán Casey are also unavailable.

Lynch, meanwhile, has plenty of injury concerns of his own heading into Friday night’s clash. First-choice goalkeeper Brian Maher remains out after suffering a broken wrist in training three weeks ago. However, his replacement, on-loan Welshman Eddie Beach, has performed admirably in the former Ireland under-21 international’s absence.

Carl Winchester, Darragh Markey, Cameron Dummigan and Brandon Fleming also missed the recent clash with Shamrock Rovers through injury.

Derry supporters will not need to think too far back to recall Shelbourne’s title-winning 1–0 victory over the Candystripes in 2024, then under the management of Ireland legend Damien Duff. Harry Wood, who scored the winner that night, has been in superb form this season and has found the net in all but one of Shelbourne’s games so far.

Lynch and the Brandywell faithful will be hoping for a significant improvement in performance against one of their likely rivals for European qualification. The Candystripes have already suffered defeats to Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians this season, two sides widely expected to challenge for both the title and European places.

Despite an ambitious winter recruitment drive that saw twelve new players arrive at the Brandywell, performances have yet to fully reflect the optimism that surrounded the club during the off-season. Many observers believed Lynch had assembled a squad capable of mounting a serious title challenge in his second season in charge, but early displays have been inconsistent.

In several games, Derry have struggled to impose themselves, most notably failing to register a shot on target against reigning double champions Shamrock Rovers. They also required late goals to edge past Waterford and Sligo Rovers, two teams widely tipped to be battling near the bottom of the table this year.

Derry will also be conscious that a demanding run of fixtures lies ahead. The Brandywell pitch is due to undergo an upgrade later this spring, meaning the club will face a sequence of away matches in the coming weeks. Four of their opening five games were played at home, but they yielded only seven points from a possible fifteen, fewer than many supporters had hoped for, while conceding seven goals in the process.

The schedule does not ease after Friday night either. Five of Derry’s next six matches will be played away from home, including difficult trips to St Patrick’s Athletic, Sligo Rovers and Shelbourne.

Lynch has repeatedly called for patience as his new-look squad continues to settle and build chemistry. However, with Bohemians already six points clear near the top of the table and another stern test arriving on Friday night, some supporters are beginning to wonder how long that bedding-in period can realistically last.

Meanwhile, Derry City winger Michael Duffy has been officially named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland (SWI) Player of the Month for February 2026, marking the first individual honours of the new Premier Division campaign.

The 31-year-old playmaker topped a competitive nationwide poll following an electric start to the season, which saw him register four goals and one assist in the opening month.

Duffy’s scintillating form was headlined by a spectacular hat-trick during the Candystripes' 4–2 comeback victory against Waterford at the Ryan McBride Brandywell on 27 February.

The reigning PFAI Player of the Year edged out Bohemians striker Colm Whelan, with Bohemians midfielder Dawson Devoy finished third in the polling.
