Westmeath 1-20 ... Derry 3-13

Despite a dramatic late rally, Derry’s senior hurlers suffered a heart breaking one-point defeat to Westmeath in Mullingar, a result that confirmed their relegation to Division Three of the Allianz National Hurling League for 2027.

Two goals deep into stoppage time from Darragh McGilligan set up a thrilling finish that briefly raised hopes of an unlikely escape, but the comeback ultimately arrived too late as the Lake County held on for a narrow victory.

Johnny McGarvey’s side travelled to Mullingar knowing their survival hopes were hanging by a thread. A narrow defeat to London the previous week had left the Oakleaf County requiring a victory over promotion-chasing Westmeath, while also relying on Laois to defeat London if they were to avoid the drop.

The Lavey native was handed a boost before throw-in with the return of Christy McNaughton to the panel, a timely addition ahead of the upcoming Christy Ring Cup campaign. The experienced forward’s return comes in a season of significant transition for Derry, with 16 new faces added to the panel since last year’s Christy Ring Cup final defeat to London.

Westmeath opted to play with the advantage of a strong first-half breeze and made it count as they built a commanding 0–15 to 0–6 lead by the interval. Sharpshooter David Williams proved particularly influential, finishing the contest with an impressive tally of 1–10, many of them from placed balls.

The opening exchanges were cagey, with Westmeath edging 0–4 to 0–2 ahead after ten minutes as Cormac O’Doherty opened Derry’s account. However, the hosts soon seized control, rattling off six unanswered points to stretch their advantage.

O’Doherty briefly stemmed the tide with a free in the twentieth minute to leave the score at 0–8 to 0–3, but Westmeath continued to dominate the proceedings. Williams remained deadly accurate from placed balls, while points from Dean Ennis, Peter Clarke, Eamonn Cunneen and Jack Gillen further extended the Lake County’s lead.

Declan Foley ended a ten-minute scoring drought for Derry approaching the half-hour mark, but the hosts continued to keep the scoreboard ticking as O’Doherty’s frees provided the only response for the visitors. By the break, Westmeath had built a comfortable nine-point cushion.

Derry began the second half with renewed intent. O’Doherty struck two early frees to reduce the deficit, though those scores were quickly cancelled out by points from Kevin Regan and Shane Williams.

The contest took a significant turn in the forty-sixth minute when Westmeath were reduced to 14 men following Rory Keyes’ dismissal for a second yellow card. The numerical advantage appeared to inject fresh momentum into the visitors.

O’Doherty continued to lead the charge, landing a hat-trick of points, while Declan Foley produced an excellent solo score as Derry chipped away at the deficit. By the midpoint of the half, the gap had been reduced to six points, with Westmeath leading 0–17 to 0–12.

David Williams steadied the hosts with two more points, but Derry were handed a lifeline late on when a scramble in the square saw the ball bundled into the net, suddenly leaving just three between the sides with two minutes of normal time remaining.

However, Westmeath responded almost immediately as Williams drove forward and finished emphatically to the net, restoring what appeared to be a decisive advantage as the game entered stoppage time.

To their credit, Derry refused to accept their fate quietly. Darragh McGilligan struck two stunning goals in quick succession deep into added time, dramatically reducing the deficit to a single point and setting up a frantic finale.

However, it was not to be for the Derrymen, with Westmeath holding their nerve in the closing moments to secure a vital win that keeps them firmly in the hunt for promotion with one game remaining. For Derry, however, the defeat confirms relegation from Division Two for the first time since 2012 following a difficult league campaign.

McGarvey and his players now have four weeks to regroup ahead of the start of the Christy Ring Cup, with Roscommon set to visit Celtic Park in the opening round as the Oakleaf County look to quickly put their league disappointment behind them.
