Eglinton Eagles who were Cup Winners
The first inaugural North West Charity U12s Cross-Community, Cross-Border tournament successfully kicked off on Sunday, November 30, at the Magee university stadium. The landmark event aimed to promote the growth of girls' football in the North West while raising vital funds for this year's chosen charities: St Vincent de Paul and Hope Mission Zambia.
Organisers have been overwhelmed by the level of interest and momentum the tournament generated, drawing support from a host of international football stars from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland teams.
High-profile international players backing the initiative include Amber Barrett, Dee Bradley, and Tyler Toland (Republic of Ireland), alongside Julie Nelson, Nadine Caldwell, and Naomi McLaughlin (Northern Ireland).
The event also saw strong support from leading local ladies' teams, including Derry City, Sion Swifts, Finn Harps, Cockhill Celtic, Tristar and Carndonagh.
"We are taken aback by the incredible response to this first-ever tournament," said a spokesperson for the organisers. "It was an amazing day for all the players and supporters, demonstrating the power of sport to unite communities and support vital causes."
The tournament was made possible through the generous support of numerous sponsors. Philips Healthcare and other contributors provided essential financial backing and charitable donations. Local businesses played a crucial role, with Crossans Jewelers supplying all medals and trophies, and CBM signs handling banners. Furthermore, staff from Altnagelvin Radiology, Enniskillen and Letterkenny porters threw their support behind the event's fundraising efforts.
The day was a resounding success, attended by Deputy Mayor Niree McMorris, St Vincent de Paul representative Neil Barr, and Hope mission Director Gareth Hayes. Linfield stars and Republic of Ireland players Jodie and Kerri Loughrey had the honour of presenting the trophies to the young athletes.
Organisers look forward to building on this success in the future, continuing to foster young talent and cross-border cooperation for the benefit of the community and charity.
