Liam Weatherall of St Joseph’s boxing club Derry emerged victorious in the 36kg category at the 2025 National Senior Cadet Boxing Championships, held at Dublin’s National Stadium recently.
In a closely contested final, Weatherall secured a 3-2 split decision win over Dinny O’Neill from St Francis Boxing Club Limerick. This win marks a significant achievement for the Derry-based boxer, who had previously faced a narrow defeat in the National BG4 Championships final earlier this year, losing 4-1 to William Delaney of Urlingford.
The National Senior Cadet Championships showcased the talents of 32 new champions across various weight divisions, highlighting the depth of emerging boxing talent in Ireland.
Weatherall opened the bout with a fast but calculated approach his sharp jabs and quick movement kept O’Neill from establishing his rhythm. Weatherall controlled the pace landing clean punches while maintaining a solid defence.Judges leaned toward Weatherall 4 .1
The second round saw O’Neill shift tactics, becoming more aggressive and attempting to corner Weatherall. O’Neill landed some notable shots, forcing Weatherall to adapt quickly. Showing good control weatherall countered well leaving the judges divided on the round.

As the bout reached its final round, both boxers increased their intensity. Weatherall displayed remarkable stamina and focus, anticipating O’Neill’s attacks turning them into opportunities for counters to see out a fantastic display of boxing from two talented young boxers.

Tony Cox's victory in the Youth 2 Irish national 39kg champion and now Liam becoming the latest champion, securing the 36kg Irish national senior cadet title.

“These victories are a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the club," said coach Cahair Duffy.
