Wrestlemania 41 will take place over two nights in Las Vegas this weekend.
It’s the biggest event in sports entertainment history, and for wrestling fans in Derry it may as well be Christmas all over again – Wrestlemania 41 is here!
This weekend – over two nights in Las Vegas – some of the most talented and famous wrestlers in the world will put it all on the line in front of 130,000 fans at the Allegiant Stadium.
And yes, we know it’s scripted, but that doesn’t take away from the absolute cinema that wrestling fans have been treated to in the last few years. Don’t say the V word, but the product has been exceptional in recent times under Triple H and Netflix, and this weekend is sure to take it to new levels yet again.
It’s the best weekend of the year. Two local wrestling fans, Andrew Cassidy and Ethan Villa, have had their say on the build, the drama, and who will walk away with their hands raised in victory.
NIGHT 1 (SATURDAY)
The War Raiders (Erik and Ivar) (c) vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods)
Tag team match for the World Tag Team Championship
Andrew: I can see at least one other team getting involved in this one, so I don't think it's a straightforward choice, but if I had to pick from those two I'd prefer The War Raiders to retain the title.
Ethan: I think this is just one of those matches where they just throw it on to get people on the show. I think the War Raiders will hold onto it. It has not had much of a build-up, and maybe they’ll have someone like Big E appear. There’s not really much going on to warrant this.
Rey Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano
Andrew: I can't see a Hall Of Famer losing at WrestleMania, but I'm a big fan of Chad Gable... not that he's in this match or anything! If you know you know!
Ethan: They have to give it to the new up and comer. Rey will fall on his sword. He’s probably the only wrestler in his 50s who isn’t terrible. Allegedly it’s Chad Gable, and it’s one of the most entertaining storylines, and he’s well overdue a pat on the back so I think El Grande will win.
Jade Cargill vs. Naomi
Andrew: This will undoubtedly be Jade Cargill for the win, and completing Naomi's heel turn.
Ethan: This is probably the most interesting build out of everything. When she came back, you would have said that Jade Cargill was a cert, but if she beats Naomi now, then what was the point? Naomi is doing brilliantly so far, just doing promos by herself. Jade lost a few weeks ago on Smackdown so there’s no more undefeated streak, so they have to give it to Naomi. They could easily keep this feud going afterwards.
LA Knight (c) vs. Jacob Fatu
WWE United States Championship
Andrew: Jacob Fatu is a beast in fairness, but I'll go for L.A. Knight... YEAH!
Ethan: God love LA Knight, but he’s getting ate. They can’t squash him, but I think there will be a few run-ins, from the B-Tec Bloodline and Braun Strowman, but I think Jacob Fatu will win this and hold it for three years if he has to.
Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Charlotte Flair
WWE Women's Championship
Andrew: This one went off script and got personal recently, but I really hope Tiffany Stratton wins. I can't stand Charlotte Flair. She's as deluded as her father!
Ethan: The messy one. Since she came back, most people would have said that Charlotte will win, but recently it has become a bit awkward. I still think she’d be better chasing for the title because she’s won it so many times. I think Tiffany was better as a heel, but even as a face, chasing Charlotte would be much more entertaining, so Charlotte will do it.
Gunther (c) vs. Jey Uso
World Heavyweight Championship
Andrew: I'd prefer it to be Gunther, but it's going to be Jay Uso that wins this one
Ethan: Gunther has to kill him. It’s a very good project that Jey Uso has. He should maybe have kept the IC title for a bit longer. You can do more with Gunther because he has the wrestling. I want Gunther to win. He lost last year, so to lose again this year would not be a good look. RIP Jey.
Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk (with Paul Heyman) vs. Seth Rollins
Triple threat match
Andrew: The Best In The World, CM Punk for this one! Better not be Roman Reigns again! Don't even know why Seth Rollins is there! Paul Heyman will be involved though in some major way.
Ethan: For custody of Paul. Phil missed last year through injury and he’s well overdue this so I think CM Punk will win. Closing out night one by burying The Shield will be nice viewing, so they have to give it to him.
NIGHT 2 (SUNDAY)
Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez (c) vs. Bayley and Lyra Valkyria
Tag team match for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship
Andrew: The Irish girl for the win! I'm going Bayley and Lyra Valkyria
Ethan: This is the most kick-off show match. Liv Morgan was probably the best woman on the roster the whole year and Racquel is her friend or something. They’ll retain. I think this was just put on to get Bayley on the card.
AJ Styles vs. Logan Paul
Andrew: AJ Styles would need to win this one. There's no reason to put Logan Paul over. He's only part time and AJ Styles in a future Hall of Famer
Ethan: For the world please, it has to be AJ. Logan is good, but he should not be beating arguably one of the best wrestlers of all time. He won last year, beating Kevin Owens and Rady Orton and he beat Rey Mysterio a few months ago. He lost the Chamber and lost the Rumble, but you can’t have AJ lose to Logan Paul for everyone’s sake, please.
Bron Breakker (c) vs. Penta vs. Finn Bálor vs. Dominik Mysterio
Fatal four-way match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
Andrew: Ireland for the win again! I'm a massive fan of Finn Balor. It'll come down to him and Breakker.
Ethan: They could do Penta, but there’s just so much you could do with Dom; having Dom pin Finn to win it would be fantastic, especially if they have Penta to do all the work and for Dom to sneak in and win it. There’s just so much that they can do with it, but they have to pull the trigger with Dom at some point.
Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre
Sin City Street Fight
Andrew: I think Drew McIntyre has what it takes to get the win in this one
Ethan: Drew. No harm to Damien Priest, but Drew should be higher on the card than this. He knows this as well, but they have to give it to him. They won the title last year only to lose it to Damien five minutes later so he’s owed one. Drew will batter him.
Iyo Sky (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Rhea Ripley
Triple threat match for the Women's World Championship
Andrew: Iyo Sky is good, but I'm going to go for Rhea Ripley in this one
Ethan: I kind of thought Iyo would win after losing last year, but I think it will be Bianca. Rhea doesn’t need it because she’s big enough. I think they could do something with Bianca’s undefeated Wrestlemania streak. They could flip the belt about over the next few months to give everyone their moment, but I think it will be Bianca.
Cody Rhodes (c) vs. John Cena
Undisputed WWE Championship
Andrew: I really hope Cena wins this one. It's not that I really like Cena, it's that I really don't like Ric Flair and I hope Cena breaks is record! In saying that I can see Cody winning it and it'll be the great passing of the torch from Cena to Cody. That's a non-answer for you!!
Ethan: It’s John. They can’t not do it. To do the unthinkable, to do the heel turn and not reward it. For him to do his last year, win it, beat everyone and leave; Cody is fantastic, he’s the new John Cena, but John Cena beating the record on his last Wrestlemania, and as a heel – we don’t want to see it, but we do want to see it. It has to be John, so he can beat Flair’s record.
