The Ulster Schools’ GAA council announced their Danske Bank All-star football and hurling teams earlier this week and Derry All-Ireland winning minor footballers feature prominently – across BOTH teams.
2024 Minor captain James Sargent is selcted in both codes, at corner-back in hurling and in midfield in football. He has represented Lavey and St Mary’s Magherafelt in both codes through his under-age career and picked up Kirk and Casement Cup hurling medals with the school teams.
Eamon Young was in defence in last year’s football selection, but this year has been slotted into the half-forward line. Like Sargent, the Newbridge player has picked up two All-Ireland minor titles.
Their St Mary’s Magherafelt team-mate Rory Small is also an All-Ireland minor medallist. He is picked in defence while St Patrick’s Maghera’s MacRory and Hogan Cup winning captain is the other corner back.
The last of the All-Ireland medallists is Cathal Ó Mianáin who collects his second hurling All-star in defence. The Slaughtneil player’s elder brother and county senior hurler Ruairí featured in the 2022 and 2023 All-star teams and that means that the family have featured in four successive All-star hurling teams.

Jimmy Smyth, chairman of Ulster schools’ GAA, said: “Congratulations to all of our young footballers and hurlers who have been selected this year as Ulster Schools’ All Stars, joining a long list of talented players, many of whom have made and are still making waves in the world of GAA.
“This year also, we have two young sportsmen collecting these awards for the second year in a row, a fantastic achievement! This certainly emphasises their selection last year and sees them carving a unique niche in the history of our awards, now in their 37th year!
“We express once again our gratitude to our sponsors Danske Bank for their continued support of our games at all levels and indeed their involvement in our All-star scheme.”
Both All-star teams will be presented with their awards at a Gala evening in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belfast on May 2nd.
