But that is Benson: a player who, it would seem, would fit in at any level, be it elite, League of Ireland or junior football, without necessarily standing out. Malleable in the extreme. (Sportsfile)
Derry City are set to sign a three-time League of Ireland winner.
The Candystripes are closing in on the signature of Robbie Benson following the expiration of his contract at Dundalk.
It was a season to forget for Benson at the club he spent seven years with as a professional footballer, as the club in which he won three League of Ireland’s were relegated while also facing the looming threat of going out of business.
Benson confirmed that he would not don the lilywhite of Dundalk again upon the conclusion of the season.
Rumours swirled about where the Athlone man would next play his football, and according to multiple sources on social media the answer seems to be Derry City.
The 32-year-old midfielder will look to bolster the midfield ahead of the upcoming maiden campaign for new manager Tiernan Lynch.
Benson will bring a vast amount of experience to the club, having played the vast majority of his career in the top flight of Ireland for the likes of UCD, Dundalk and St Patrick's Athletic, winning three league titles and two League of Ireland cups at the Lilywhites while also lifting the FAI cup in 2021 with St. Pats.
Experience is seemingly something that Lynch seems to be looking for as evidenced in his transfer activity.
The signing of Northern Ireland international Shane Ferguson (33) and the rumoured signings of Liam Boyce (33) and Gavin Whyte (28) demonstrate a distinct direction in Lynch’s signings.
Between these three players, there is a wealth of international experience; there are 115 caps for the Green and White Army.
The disappointment felt by Derry City fans at the end of last season when their hopes of a double were dashed firstly by Shelbourne in the league and then by Drogheda United in the FAI cup may be driving this transfer policy, with the ambition not to be building a squad with silverware being the ambition for the future but to bring in the experience needed to get the current squad over the line next season.
