Another Derry City departure as Patrick McEleney joins Ballymena United

Derry City

Patrick McEleney is no longer a Derry City player.

Patrick McEleney has become the third player to leave the Brandywell this week after agreeing a deal to join Irish league side Ballymena United in the New Year.

The Derry City captain's departure comes less than 24 hours after it was announced that his brother Shane had also left the club to join Glentoran.

McEleney, who recently celebrated his 300th appearance with his home town club, featured in Sunday's FAI Cup Final but was unable to finish the game due to a head injury suffered just before half time.

McEleney won two FAI Cups, the First Division title and the 2011 League Cup with Derry City.

Ballymena United manager Jim Evans was understandably delighted to get the deal done.

"Signing a player of Patrick’s calibre is an incredible boost for the club," he said. "He is a top-class footballer, widely respected across the game. His experience and winning mentality will be invaluable as we continue our exciting project. I want to extend my thanks to everyone involved in making this transfer possible.”
