A poor defensive display ensured Institute suffered their first defeat of the season, as Harland & Wolff Welders capitalised at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Joshua Kee's double and David Parkhouse's tap-in ensured Paul Kee's side ran out in the deserved winners.
For Kevin Deery he will obviously bitterly disappointed in the matter in which his side conceded all three goals, but he will bebl equally as frustrated that his front-line failed to take their clear cut chances when they arrived.
With the game in the balance Mikhail Kennedy, Michael Harris and Jamie Browne all missed glorious chances to put the home side in front.
In the trio's defence, former Derry City number two goalkeeper Jack Mills made a string of top drawer saves in the Welders goal.
The woodwork denied Stute on five minutes as Kennedy's super 25 yard free-kick, which had Mills well beaten, came crashing back off the post.
‘Stute had the ball in the net on 20 minutes but James Browne's effort was rightfully ruled out for offside.
Welders took the lead a minute later after a defensive mistake as Shane Boyle's under hit back pass was chased down and won by Parkhouse, the former Derry City striker did well to cut the ball back to Kee and the midfielder gleefully fired high into the net.
Institute equalised in somewhat controversial circumstances five minutes later.
Parkhouse was ordered off by referee Stewart Long to receive treatment for a bloody nose and from Caoimhin Porter's resulting free-kick Padraig Lynch netted, firing home after debut boy Berti Diau had rose to knock down the initial free-kick.
The Drumahoe men missed a glorious chance to take the lead 35 minutes as Kennedy got in behind the Welders high-line, but the striker saw his close range effort kept out by Mills, who spread himself well to keep the ball out.
Kennedy, who was lively throughout the first half, went close on 40 minutes, but after controlling the ball well inside the box, but his first-time volley was easily saved by Mills.
Just before the break the Belfast men went close, but a combination of Porter and goalkeeper Fintan Doherty denied Parkhoiuse, after the striker got in at the back post.
Institute started the second half on the front foot and should have scored a second on 46 minutes as Browne broke clear down the left and his centre found Harris at the back post, but his side footed strike was saved by Mills.
A minute later Harris turned provider as his right wing centre found Kennedy, his first time shot was saved by Mills and the Waterside native made another save, keeping out Browne's follow-up effort.
Welders regained the lead on 51 minutes as the ball fell kindly to Kee on the edge of the box and midfielder's low drive nestled into Doherty's bottom right hand corner.
Paul Kee's side scored their third goal on 58 minutes as James McCarthy's high free-kick from the left found an unmarked Lewis Patterson at the back post, he nodded the ball back across the six yard box and Parkhouse was on hand to make no mistake from close range.
Doherty had to make a big save just after the hour mark as Parkhouse rose well to knock the ball into Tiaran O'Connor's path, but the striker's close range shot was kept out by the Stute keeper's right boot.
Welders net-minder had to make a superb save in the closing stages as substitute James McClay got in behind the Welders back-line before feeding fellow sub Gabriel Aduaka, but with his weaker right foot, his low shot was well kept out by a diving Mills.
