Institute got back to winning ways with a well-deserved victory over Dergview at the Brandywell.

Goals in either half from Oisin Devlin and Patrick McClure sealed the win for Kevin Deery and his players.

‘Stute had a great chance to take the lead just 60 seconds into the game when Michael Harris raced clear on goal, closely followed by Dergview defender Dean Corrigan. Harris failed to get the ball under control and had his eventual shot blocked by the defender, but he still managed to retain possession and set up Liam Mullan, but the midfielder side-footed high over the bar.

‘Stute survived a scare shortly afterwards however when Dergview’s first corner almost resulted in a goal, the ball whipped in by Niall McGinley, and almost going straight in, but Oisin Devlin hooked the ball off the line.

Set plays were causing problems for both teams, and it was from ‘Stute’s first corner that they took the lead on 12 minutes. The delivery was cleared to the edge of the area where Shaun Leppard took control and showed great skill to beat Jamie Brown before lofting the ball into the area, where the ball eventually fell to Oisin Devlin to fire in his second goal of the season.

The home side were in control, after that, passing the ball well and looking good for a potential second goal, but Dergview reminded them of just how fragile the lead was on 26 minutes. Niall Fielding collected the ball on the left in the ‘Stute half and he sent a sublime ball in behind the defence to Padraig Lynch, who just needed to guild e the ball past Gareth Muldoon, but got it all wrong instead and shot over.

The start of the second half was very open with both teams coming close within the first few minutes, Lynch beating Muldoon to a high ball but looping a header onto the roof of the net, before Tiarnan McKinney truck the frame of the goal with a powerful effort from a tight angle.

The same player should have doubled ‘Stute’s lead soon afterwards. Found in space by Sean Carlin, the winger could have hit it first time, but took a touch and tried to curl it into the far-right corner but sent it over instead.

It was then Michael Harris who should have doubled ‘Stute’s lead as he went clean through on goal, but with only the goalkeeper to beat, he side-footed the ball over, leaving the forward with his head in his hands and still waiting for his first goal of the season.

The second goal finally arrived right on 90 minutes when an attempted ball forward was charged down and substitute Patrick McClure raced through to calmly slide the ball past O’Gara and into the net, a goal met with absolute delight from Deery on the sidelines.
