A Derry Sinn Fein councillor has called on anyone with information about the attempted armed rohbery of a post office in the city earlier this week to pass it on to police.

PSNI detectives are hunting a man following the incident which occurred in the Rosemount area at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The suspect, carrying a holdall, entered the premises (pictured) at the junction of Academy Road and Park Avenue where pulled an item out of the holdall which was wrapped in a plastic bag and pointed it at staff, demanding money.

No cash was handed over and he fled the scene empty handed.

Police said he was wearing a red full-zip hooded top with white writing across the chest, dark coloured tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.

Urging anyone with information to contact the PSNI, Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Mickey Cooper, said: "Sadly this is not the first business in the area to have been targeted in recent years.

“There is only so much the owners of such premises can do to protect staff and their businesses against these criminals preying on our communities.

“I would urge anyone with information on this attempted robbery to contact the police.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 843 of 18/10/16 or through the independent charity Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 to speak to them anonymously.
