A former Irish Army soldier who bit a man’s nose in an unprovoked has been granted a variation to his bail conditions to attend a job interview in Derry.

Barry Fitzgerald, 25, from Doire House, Carrigans in County Donegal, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Ali Halimi (pictured above after the attack) outside a fast food takeaway in the city centre on April 14, 2013.

Fitzgerald was convicted of the offence at Derry Crown Court in May.

He was released on bail and is due to be sentenced in September.

As part of his bail conditions, the defendant is must not enter the 30mph zone of Derry except for police, medical and court appointments.

However, a Crown Court judge today approved a variation sought to his bail conditions so that he could come into Derry at 12.30pm for a job interview at a city centre restaurant.
