The popular Claudy Contry Park is set to receive a major upgrade.
Derry and Strabane District Council is currently seeking a contractor for a major refurbishment and upgrade of Claudy Country Park.
The project will develop the area surrounding the park and play area in a variety of ways.
A spokesperson for the council said the works will make the park more user friendly.
“The project will see major investment in the play park, including both the refurbishment and replacement of elements of the existing play provision along with new play facilities for users with special needs,” said the spokesperson.
“The seating areas will be enhanced with a focus on providing safe and convenient spaces for visitors to
sit and enjoy the local river environment.”
According to the tender published last Wednesday, hard landscaping and safety surfaces will be repaired
and renewed in places and retained elsewhere.
Fences, handrails and street furniture will also be repaired and replaced where needed.
Natural drainage with diversions and soakaways will be added to avoid water pounding against or gathering on the path.
The council expects to award a contractor next year and begin works in the summer. The project is expected to be complete and usable by mid-2024.
The wider park and car park will remain open during construction.
The contractor will be required to be proactive in its health and safety measures for positive pedestrian management throughout the building phase and manage pedestrian interference, according to the council.
Care will be taken to ensure the river is respected throughout the process as it is a Special Area of
Conservation and an area of Special Scientific Interest and there are invasive species' in the park that require management.
“This project is one of a number of significant strategic capital investment projects being developed by the Council as part of its commitments under its Inclusive Strategic Growth Plan.
“The proposed works are being substantially funded by the Department for Communities but also include match funding contributions from Council,” the council representative added.
