Foyle MLA warns Northern Ireland must not fall behind on Net Zero

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has warned that Northern Ireland risks being left behind in the global transition to Net Zero and urged the Executive to take urgent action.
Speaking after the Assembly passed an SDLP motion calling for a new renewable energy support scheme and planning reform to boost renewable energy development, Ms McLaughlin said:
''While we have taken some steps, such as legally binding emissions targets and an Energy Strategy, our pace of change lags behind other regions. Unlike Great Britain or the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland still lacks a dedicated renewable energy support scheme, leaving us at a competitive disadvantage, while driving up costs for businesses. This failure lies with the Executive.
''There is huge opportunity for the North West when it comes to the green transition. With the right investment, this region can become a hub for green jobs and clean energy innovation, driving economic regeneration while tackling the climate crisis. This would have significant benefits for both our environment and the local economy.''
''The green transition must also be a cross-departmental priority. The Economy Minister must ensure businesses are supported, while the Infrastructure Minister must tackle red tape stalling grid expansion and we must protect consumers from rising energy costs. A greener future is not just an environmental necessity —it’s an economic opportunity we cannot afford to miss''
