Micheal Martin ‘confident’ Government will win ‘cynical’ confidence vote

A family member of a Bloody Sunday victim has spoken about the ‘disgraceful’ comments of Micheál Martin about the Troubles.

Tony Doherty wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to the comments made by  Micheál Martin on ‘The Big Interview’ about the Troubles and Sinn Fein ahead of the Irish General Election.

The outgoing Tánaiste of Ireland said: “I have issues about how Sinn Fein consistently endeavoured to rewrite history to triumphalise what was a terrible conflict and a terrible war.

“Imposed by the Provisional IRA. I think I would be careful of saying both sides too. There were wrongs committed on behalf of the state, the British state in particular, but nothing justified and Canova’s report recently, the report into collusion.

“He nails it, John Boucher, when he says that the war of the Provisional IRA was on its own people.”

Tony Doherty, son of Patrick Doherty, the son of one of the 14 victims on Bloody Sunday, and Chairperson of Bloody Sunday Trust posted a response on X.

He said: “This is disgraceful and factually wrong, but that doesn’t matter because there’s an election on and apparently anything goes, even mad cack like this. Frankly, Ireland deserves better than this lickspittle politics. Time for change!”

Joe Brolly, All Ireland winner with Derry in 1993 and columnist, also posted his thoughts on Micheál Martin’s comments.

He said: “Micheal Martin in Derry for the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, smiling and pretending to support the families. The paratroop regiment gleefully opened fire on a civil rights march, murdering 14 people and wounding many more. Micheal now says they brought it on themselves.”
