Derry’s Guildhall Square is to host a winter fuel repayment rally.
The rally will begin at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, October 29.
Following the rally, there will be a meeting with the Derry City and Strabane District Council to hear from the Freeze the Cuts campaign, Unite the Union, and Age NI representatives calling for Reinstatement of the Winter Fuel.
The cut to the Winter Fuel payment was announced by the new chancellor, Rachel Reeves, in a speech in July.
Reeves’s speech set out a series of cuts in an effort to plug what she said was a £22bn hole in the government’s finances left by the Conservatives, a deficit she insisted had not been anticipated. Limiting the winter fuel payment will save about £1.5bn a year.
This rally at the Guildhall comes a day prior to the announcement of the latest UK Budget, the first from a Labour government in 14 years, which will take place on Wednesday, October 30, at 12:30 pm.
