A County Derry lifeguard ‘thrilled’ on The Voice as he got the judges chairs to turn.

Jack Magee impressed the judges and the crowd as he performed the Coldplay song Yellow.

The Slaughtmanus native spoke about his journey as a singer beginning at a young age.

Jack said: “I would love to become a singer.

“I had received a message on Instagram about auditioning for the Voice, I thought it was fake at first, and then I went into it and it was audition after audition to where we are now.

“I first started singing when I was six; my mammy and dad especially couldn’t believe it, where I got the singing skills from, as they can’t sing.”

Jack’s parents, Michelle and Patrick, were incredibly supportive as his audition neared, with his mother believing he would ‘smash it’, while Patrick was a bit more relaxed about his upcoming performance.

Patrick said: “I’m very proud.

“If it doesn’t work, you are an amazing swimmer.”

Jack would perform his audition in front of judges Tom Jones and Will.i.am, who have been with the show from the first season, and new judges LeAnn Rimes (country singer) and McFly band members Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones.

Right from the beginning of his performance, the judges were impressed with Jack’s ‘great voice’.

The crowd were urging the judges to turn their chairs by pressing their button, as for the contestant to progress, a chair of a judge must turn before the end of their performance.

Jack was about to finish his rendition of ‘Yellow’ and to his elation, Tom Jones pressed his button.

The judges were complimentary of Jack’s performance and his ‘unique voice’.

Danny said: “We loved it; I know we didn’t turn, but we are thrilled that you got through because a voice like yours should not be wasted, so congratulations.”

The legendary Welsh singer was quick to detect Jack’s Irish accent and believed he was a ‘nice kid’.

Tom said: “Welcome to team Tom.

“You did great.

“I thought you made a lovely sound; I thought there was a lot of character in that voice.

I really enjoyed it, so that is why I turned.”

Jack has progressed to the next round of the voice and is set to be coached by the ‘It’s Not Unusual’ singer, with the 20-year-old getting one step closer to his dream.

He said: “It took until the last second for them to turn, but it was then overwhelming and brilliant.

“I honestly just wanted one of them to turn, so any of the judges would have been amazing for me. But I did have two in my head, it was either Tom or the McFly boys.

“I’ll be in the next round, so keep tuning in.”
