Eastwood calls for end to housing intimidation

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP has called for an end to intimidation at new housing developments in the city.
It follows racist and sectarian graffiti appearing at a new housing development in the Church Brae area.
Foyle MP Mr Eastwood said: “Families in Derry understand better than most the need for good quality housing to tackle our huge waiting lists and so that young people can get on the housing ladder. Accessible and affordable housing has been a huge challenge in our city for generations and that’s why it’s particularly disappointing to see a new housing development attacked in this way.
“Derry is a diverse and changing city and nobody has the right to try and dictate who should live where or engage in pathetic attempts to mark territory as we have seen this week. Housing need has nothing to do with religion or your place of birth, it’s experienced by people from every community and we should be focusing on dealing with that rather than seeking to intimidate or create fear in certain areas.
“I fully condemn the attack on the housing development in Church Brae and would ask those behind it to stop harming their own community. There can be no justification for this kind of activity and I call on leaders within this community to show leadership, call this out and ensure that everyone has the right to live safely and securely in this area.”
