First anniversary Mass to be held for teenage friends who tragically drowned in Enagh Lough

A first anniversary Mass will take place tonight for teenage friends Reuven Simon, left, and Joseph Sebastian drowned in August last year.

A Mass will be held in Derry on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of two teenage friends who drowned last year while swimming in Enagh Lough.

Reuven Simon and Joseph Sebastian were swimming at Enagh Lough on August 29, 2022 when they got into difficulty.

The tragedy last year sparked calls for a review of safety measures at the lough.

A multi-agency meeting was then convened by Derry City and Strabane District Council in October 2022 to address safety concerns at the site.

Ownership over the lough proved to be a complex issue, with several different landowners owning various parts around the edge of the area.

A council spokesperson said they have erected signage at the site following approval from landowners and funding from several sources, including the Honourable Irish Society.

The first anniversary Mass will be held at St Columb's Church, Chapel Road this evening at 7.30pm.
