Independent candidate for the Faughan ward, Graham Warke, has been eliminated from the running to be councillor after receiving 279 votes.

The former Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Council said he has left the count and politics with his "head held high."

Mr Warke wrote: "Today I leave the Foyle Arena and also politics with my head held high.

"I want to say a massive thank you to everyone I have met and helped me on my journey; also for all the support I have received.

"During my year as Mayor, I did it my way and kept to my word. I love this City and District and will continue to build bridges.

"Good luck to everyone standing today. Now I am looking forward to enjoying quality family time and will always follow my heart."
