Derry's Lisa McGee wins Best Writer at BAFTAs

Derry Girls’ creator and Derry native, Lisa McGee, scooped the award for Best Writer of a comedy

BAFTA last night announced the winners of the BAFTA Television Craft Awards 2023 at a ceremony in London, celebrating the very best behind-the-scenes television talent of 2022.

Derry Girls’ creator and Derry native, Lisa McGee, scooped the award for Best Writer of a comedy.

Lisa took to social media to announce her win with the wholesome caption: "Till next time London. Keep writing kids x"

Lisa’s hit Channel 4 show has received worldwide fandom and well and truly placed Derry on the map for all the right reasons.

The series is also nominated for three BAFTA TV Awards; Best Scripted Comedy, Female Performance in a Comedy Programme (Siobhán McSweeney) and the series finale is up for the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award.

The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award is the only Bafta decided by public vote. The Derry Girls finale covers the voting process for the Good Friday agreement through the characters we laughed and cried with for three incredible seasons.

The awards, hosted by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, will take place on Sunday May 14 where the rest of the winners will be announced.
