A 31 year-old man interrupted his bail hearing at Derry Magistartes Court this morning to say he wished to remain in prison.

Emmett Coyle, of Hawthorn Drive, appeared via video link from Maghaberry Prison.

He is charged with an assault on police on June 12.

The court heard that police had been called to a bar in Brandywell Avenue where Coyle had been refusing to leave and was aggressive to staff.

When police arrived Coyle threw a punch at a police officer and was aggressive, spitting and kicking out at police.

He was described as being 'highly intoxicated and angry'.

Coyle interrupted court proceedings, addressed the court and said: 'I don't want bail.'

Seamus Quigley, his defence solicitor, said: 'Are you happy to stay in custody until August 7?'

Coyle indicated that he was and did not want to be granted bail.

He will appear back before the court again for his next hearing via video link from prison on August 7.
