A 48 year-old man who exposed himself outside a Derry shopping centre in full view of the public has been given a three month suspended sentence.
Damien Joseph Young, whose address was listed as no fixed abode, appeared before Derry Magistrates on Thursday where he was convicted of indecent behaviour.
The court heard that on Wednesday Young was seen outside Quayside Shopping Centre on the Strand Road with his trousers around his knees and his privates exposed.
Young was in full view of the public and children who police say were ‘visibly shocked’ by his actions.
When police arrived they observed that Young was intoxicated and unable to pull his trousers up.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client was aware his behaviour was unacceptable and asked that he be given credit for his plea.
Sentencing Young to a three month jail term, suspended for 12 months, District Judge Barney McElholm said: “I accept this was a drunk man who had probably been attempting to urinate. However, it’s disturbing and distressing for young children to witness.
“Quite frankly, I’d rather not see him back here. I wish him all the best of luck in Strabane and long may he enjoy the hospitality of that town.”
