A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with a number of serious domestic abuse offences.

John Charles Whoriskey (44) of Auburn Terrace in Derry was charged with, on October 23, allegedly assaulting his former partner.

He was also charged with, between February 2022 and November this year, allegedly being engaged in abusive behavior and, on dates unknown, he was said to have damaged a number of items belonging to his former partner.

The court heard that Whoriskey's 18-year marriage had ended within the last six months and his behavior was said to have been escalating in the time since, including allegedly taking keys to shared cars and taking bank cards, leaving his former partner with no money.

The court also heard that Whoriskey's former partner has alleged that he has been coming to her property and letting himself in without her permission, leading to her having to change the locks.

Police objected to bail and Whoriskey has denied all charges.

Defence solicitor Emma McBride said that Whoriskey had answered all questions and made identical allegations against his former partner when being interviewed by police.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said that these were 'very serious allegations' and said that he was 'surprised' that there wasn't a non-molestation order in place.

He granted bail and Whoriskey will appear again on November 28.
