The Derry workmates of an Inishowen man who passed away in May are running the Waterside Half Marathon in his memory.
Danny McAuley from Carramaddy in Burt was a “valued member“ of Derry construction company, EHA’s London-based quantity surveying team, according to Commercial Manager, Dermot Bradley.
Dermot said: “Danny was much liked and hugely respected amongst all his colleagues, both in the office and on site. His friendly, yet witty personality endeared him to all he met.
“As a mark of our respect for Danny, we decided we could not let his death pass without marking it in some way. Therefore a number of us have decided to run the Waterside Half Marathon, in Derry, on Sunday, September 3, as a fundraiser for Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke.
“Committing to running the Waterside Half Marathon, in total or as part of a relay team, has encouraged people within EHA with limited fitness levels, to train hard, This shows the good influence Danny had on us!
“Whilst a marathon is not for everyone, our Just Giving page means everyone has the opportunity to honour the memory of Danny by making a donation, said Dermot.
Describing Danny as “a gentle giant”, Dermot Bradley said his sudden death in May caused widespread “shock and sadness” within EHA.
Dermot said: “Danny was a gentle giant, caring, thoughtful and extremely kind. He was a larger than life character, full of mischief and always up for a laugh, mostly making us laugh.
“Danny is greatly missed in our daily lives and is always in our thoughts. So as our tribute to him, we are aiming to raise much-needed funds for Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke, an extremely worthwhile cause.
“We have set ourselves the target of raising £950 and so far, I am delighted to say we have raised 60 per cent of that total. Any donations to our Just Giving page will be very much appreciated by Danny’s family, friends and colleagues,” added Dermot.
