Planning application submitted for 44 new social homes in Drumahoe

Mixed-use residential scheme on the Fincairn Road aims to tackle the growing demand for affordable housing in the local area.

Plans for 44 new social homes in Drumahoe have been submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Department..

The recently-submitted planning application seeks permission for a mixed development including semi-detached townhouses, three duplex apartment blocks, two complex needs houses and a wheelchair bungalow, with associated car parking, play area and retaining wall structure, on lands south west of 41 Fincairn Road and north east of Fincairn Cottage Square.

An accompanying Design and Access Statement said the development will deliver high quality social housing accommodation in accordance with the requirements of the Strategic Planning Policy Statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) and council’s Local Development Plan (LDP) 2032, has been developed in consultation with NIHE, and seeks to “address identified social housing need” within the Drumahoe area.

The site comprises agricultural land and is bounded by Fincairn Road to the north west, and an existing residential development to the south and east. It also borders on to agricultural land to the north.

The Statement said the site represents an “appropriate location for residential development”, as its edge-of-settlement location allows access to public transport routes, schools and community facilities, local retail, and service provision within Drumahoe.

“The development represents a high-quality residential scheme which addresses identified housing need in Drumahoe, complies with the LDP 2032, provides sustainable and inclusive housing.

“The proposal will deliver 44 social housing units, address a recognised housing need within the local area, and provide a well-designed residential environment which integrates successfully with the surrounding settlement,” the Statement reads.
