Derry's historic Boomhall Estate set for major restoration project

Derry City and Strabane District Council backs Boom Hall Trust's vision for a new community hub, café, and day nursery.
The historic Boomhall Estate was today granted outline planning approval for a major restoration project by Derry City and Strabane District Council's Planning Committee.
Outline planning permission was granted to the Boom Hall Trust for the restoration of Boomhall House and the surrounding lands to deliver a mix of land uses including educational (day nursery), a café, cultural and community floorspace and ancillary residential institutional accommodation. Works also include access improvements on Culmore Road and the provision of passing bays on the private site road, provision of car parking, and restoration of the historic landscape.
Chair of the Planning Committee at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Pat Murphy, in congratulating Boom Hall Trust for bringing forward the application said he was delighted to welcome this first stage in planning for the restoration of Boomhall House and wider site.
"The restoration of Boomhall House represents an exciting opportunity to protect an important part of our local heritage while creating a valuable resource for the wider community.
“By bringing new educational, cultural and community uses to this historic estate, the project will ensure that Boomhall can be enjoyed by future generations and continue to play an active role in the social and cultural life of our district. I congratulate Boom Hall Trust for developing this project and I look forward to seeing the project develop further in the coming months and years."
The restoration aims to strike a balance between protecting the estate's rich built and natural heritage assets, while providing facilities that meet the needs of modern users.
The proposed restoration project reflects a commitment to protecting the site's built and natural heritage while supporting community development, education and wellbeing. It is anticipated that the revitalised estate will become a significant destination, enhancing the local area and contributing to its social, cultural and economic development.
Council looks forward to engaging further with Boom Hall Trust in terms of progressing the project beyond the planning stage to the next phases.
