Derry City and Strabane District councillor Conor Heaney (Sinn Féin) has welcomed planning approval for a new housing development on upper Springtown Road.

The proposal will include hundreds of new homes, community facilities and infrastructure for a new bus route serving the area.

Cllr. Heaney said: "I was delighted to support the  application at Council's Planning Committee for 259 new social homes at Springtown Road. This development will include a new Community centre and children’s playpark and will also facilitate a turning circle which will allow a new bus service for the entire Springtown Road area.

"Over the last four years I have been engaged in a sustained lobby of the Department for Infrastructure for the provision of a public bus service covering the upper Hazelbank area," he added.

"As a result of this lobby the Department had requested that the developer include a bus turning circle within the new development.

"This will now allow Translink to develop a new bus route in the area which can service estates such as St Eithnes, Derrymore, Sheriffs Glen and Hawthorn.

"I will continue to engage with Translink to progress the development of the new route and will update residents when the construction schedule for the new estate and turning circle has been confirmed."
