Derry City and Strabane District Council participated in a tree-planting ceremony in honour of Strabane man John Gallagher on Saturday.

This special initiative is part of the National Trust’s “Tree of Hope’” programme and took place on November 22 2025, aligning with National Tree Week.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Ruairí McHugh who attended the event said: "The “Tree of Hope”' is more than a memorial, it is a powerful symbol of our community's resilience and hope, mirroring the profound and positive impact John Gallagher had on all of us. The Council is deeply proud to support this living tribute, ensuring his spirit continues to inspire Strabane for generations to come."

The Sycamore Tree, propagated from the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree that was felled in September 2024, symbolises hope, renewal, and enduring connection. It will serve as a living tribute to John Gallagher, a respected member of the community who dedicated his life to serving others with kindness and spirit.

Erin, John’s daughter said:  "We are truly delighted and deeply touched that John is being honoured in such a beautiful and meaningful way. To have this “Tree of Hope” planted in his memory ensures that his life, his kindness, and his incredible spirit will have a visible and lasting legacy here in the heart of Strabane."

The Tinney’s has been chosen as the preferred site for the tree due to its civic significance, as it already hosts a commemorative Covid Tree planted by a former Mayor.

Careful consideration has been given to ensure the tree’s growth does not visually impact the Tinney’s Sculptures.

A plaque will accompany the tree, bearing the inscription: "The John Gallagher Tree of Hope (The Strabane Sycamore). Planted in loving memory of John Gallagher, 1972-2024. A respected member of our community who gave his time, kindness, and spirit in service of others. Grown from the famous Sycamore Gap Tree, this tree stands as a symbol of hope, renewal, and enduring connection – a living tribute to the strength of John, community, and nature."

Gregor Fulton, Trees and Woodland Adviser at the National Trust in Northern Ireland, said: “This sapling is one of the first to be planted out of 49 Sycamore Gap tree saplings gifted by the National Trust to communities across the UK. They have been nurtured at the National Trust's Plant Conservation Centre and are now ready to be planted in accessible spaces, enabling people to feel part of the iconic tree's legacy.

"To have the Sycamore Gap tree live on through these saplings is very special - we hope they’ll become a special place to reflect and we’re looking forward to seeing them thrive. Over the next couple of years, the saplings will start to take shape, and as sycamores are so hardy, they should be able to withstand a range of conditions. It's a fitting tribute - and a lovely way to commemorate John Gallagher - that we hope we touch many lives."

The Mayor concluded that the Council fully recognises the importance of planting trees in contributing positively to tackling climate change and fostering community spirit and that the Tree of Hope commemorating John Gallagher was a very meaningful addition to The Tinney’s.
