A team of archeologists are planning to return to a castle on the outskirts of Derry in the hope of finding key information about the seat of the ancient O’Neill dynasty.

It is now thought the dig at Elagh Castle, located between the back roads of Galliagh and the border with Donegal, may help solve a riddle regarding the original stronghold of the O’Neill family.

A growing number of scholars have now expressed doubts over the authenticity of the Grianan of Aileach site in Burt having been the location of the Irish royal clan seat and palace.

Initial explorations as part of the Legenderry Digs project in 2013 found remnants of a curved stone fort-like wall structure beneath the remaining ruins of the later 14th Century medieval castle on the Galliagh site.
