People in Derry are being asked to attend a peace rally tomorrow in the wake of last weekend’s car bomb attack and Monday’s widespread disruption caused by a series of security alerts.

The rally, organised by the public service union NIPSA will begin at 1pm tomorrow in the Peace Garden on Foyle Street.

NIPSA’s General Secretary Alison Millar has asked the public to “please make the effort to attend and show your support for a peaceful and inclusive society for all.”

The rally’s organisers have added that there is ‘no going back’ to the past and the message delivered at the event will be “no to paramiltarism, no to sectarianism and no to repression.”

There was widespread anger and frustration following the car bomb attack on Bishop Street and the alerts that followed it. Politicians, clergy and community leaders have spoken out strongly against the recent disorder.

Police have blamed armed republican group the ‘New IRA’ for the bombing and the other incidents that followed and PSNI District Commander Gordon McCalmont has assured people in the city that resources are in place to deal with the current level of threat.

Meanwhile, republican political party Saoradh have denied they have any links to the ‘New IRA’.
