Death in Moneymore: PSNI issue warning on drugs and substance abuse

By Maria Cassidy
The PSNI yesteday released a warning on the danger of drugs and substance abuse after a 34- year-old man from Moneymore died on Sunday night.
A post mortem has yet to determine the cause of the death, but police have said a possible link to drug and substance abuse is a strong line of enquiry. A 26-year old man has been taken to hospital and was said to be in a serious condition.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Foster said: “Our investigation is at an early stage but we believe that drugs may be a factor in both incidents. We also believe that a number of other people may have sought medical attention last night after becoming unwell following the consumption of drugs.
“We are trying to establish the circumstances of what happened and I appeal for anyone who was at the property on Northland Road in Moneymore or anyone who has any information about the incident to contact detectives based in Mid Ulster on 101.
“We would also strongly advise anyone from considering taking any type of substance not to do so. If you have taken drugs or substances and are feeling unwell please see medical attention immediately.”
Mid Ulster SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone gave his condolences to the family on social media: “So sad to hear of another untimely death, my sympathies to the family of the deceased. But people, please avoid taking these substances which cause further health problems and, in this case, fatality.”
Mid Ulster DUP MLA Keith Buchanan expressed concern following the death. He said: "The death of anyone is a tragedy and my sympathies are with the family of the man who has passed away. It is very concerning that a number of people in the area have sought medical attention following taking drugs. The message must be very clear - any drug can kill but this incident highlights that no-one can ever be certain what is in a drug they may take. “I hope that those who have received treatment will make a full recovery and anyone who is concerned about a substance they have taken should seek medical attention. People should assist the police with any information they have about drugs and help them to keep our streets safer and free from these deadly substances."
And, Sinn Féin MLA Ian Milne said: "This death is an absolute tragedy for the family and friends of the victim and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult time.
“I also wish the man currently in hospital a full recovery.
"News of a suspected drug-related death over the weekend is deeply worrying.
"I would appeal to anyone not to take drugs or anything they are unsure about. And if anyone has taken anything, or becomes concerned about a friend who has taken something, they should seek medical help immediately.
“I am calling on everyone to remain cautious and vigilant in the face of this problem, and to share any information they may have with medical and emergency staff.
